About Us

Shawn Busby

I wasn’t always this fit guy you see now. When I was 29, I had a profitable career as a car salesman, working 60-hour weeks. But I was extremely unhealthy. I ate fast food for every meal and eventually topped the scales at 275 pounds! I also smoked two packs of cigarettes a day and downed a case of beer nightly. After I had neglected my body, soul, marriage, and every other important area of my life, my wife left me and took everything.

Then, as my life continued to spiral out of control, I turned to drugs, alcohol, and more food to numb the pain. I was on a destructive path towards prison, the hospital, or worse . . . death. But God stepped in and got my attention, and changed my world forever.

One night as I fell asleep (on my mother’s couch), I felt deep within my soul that I was supposed to move away from the city I was living in and the negative scene and people that were surrounding me. With only $272 to my name, I packed a suitcase and moved to Oklahoma City. I paid the weekly rate at a low-end hotel and began looking for a job. I changed everything in my life—from the city I lived in, my phone number, and what I did in my free time, to my career. I got a job waiting tables so that I could spend more time seeking God and His plan for my life.

One day at my tiny one-bedroom, all-bills-paid apartment, I was looking in the mirror with tears streaming down my face. The person staring back at me was unhealthy, unhappy, and far from being the man I was created to be. Right then and there I knelt down on my living room floor and surrendered my life to God. I cried out to Him to show me where to make a change. There was no audible voice or burning bush, but as I caught sight of my old running shoes and iPod, I knew without a doubt that He was telling me to run.

So I did. I fell completely in love with running, and as I spent hours and hours out on the road alone with God, I would constantly ask Him what He wanted me to do next. And He consistently said, “Shawn, I want you to keep running.”

I then made a New Year’s Resolution in 2009 that I would complement my cardio by hitting the gym three days a week. Within six months, I had lost over 50 pounds. One day as I looked in the mirror—but this time with tears of joy streaming down my face—it hit me like a truck that I was getting a new body and becoming a new man. And it was then that God said, “This is what I want you to do with your life—help get people fit.”

I immediately began working on my Personal Training Certificate, which I received through The National Academy of Sports Medicine. Once I completed my certification, I began training anybody I could find—mostly the waiters and waitresses from my work. As they began to lose weight and I became a better trainer, more and more people wanted my help. That’s when the idea came to me to open a fitness boot camp.

I prayerfully designed a group training facility that would help people accomplish their fitness goals and honor God. I created it with an exact mission in mind:

“To passionately shepherd all those in need into a life of physical and spiritual fitness through training, encouragement, compassion and love.  We will lead by example.  We will operate out of love.  And give all glory and praise to God.

And now, that’s what we do here day in and day out—fight on the frontlines of clinical obesity and sedentary lifestyles. We take what would be an otherwise miserable task—running, jumping, lifting, sweating—and make it as enjoyable as possible with fun, challenging workouts, encouragement, support, laughter, love, and prayer.

This is more than a gym or boot camp—it’s an awesome fitness family, and we would love for you to join us and let us lead you on your journey to health and fitness. It’s my hope that my story will inspire you to take that next life-changing step, believing that with God all things are possible.

Sometimes you discover your purpose in life quickly and easily. Other times, you come to it after a series of twists and turns and detours. Such was the case for me. When I was young, I had no clue what I wanted to be. However, I was always very athletic from about the age of five through High School. Unfortunately though, things took a turn for the worse my senior year of High School, which caused me to stop playing sports altogether and go down a dark path.

After I graduated High School I left home and just partied throughout my twenties. I worked here and there as a server and bartender, but didn’t have any real purpose or direction for my life. Work was never steady and for a few years I didn’t even have a stable place to live. I would sell whatever possessions I had to try to make extra money. But it was never enough. I bounced between friends’ houses and from couch to couch. Truth be told, I had nothing. I didn’t even own a car. I maybe had four shirts to my name, a couple pairs of pants, and my dog, (who is thankfully the only thing from that time that is with me to this day). I simply got in with the wrong crowd as I was trying to numb the pain and disappointment of my life through things that only took me farther and farther away from health and from God.

Needless to say, I hit rock bottom around the age of 27. But this is what it took to wake me up real quick to the reality that if I didn’t make a change fast, things were going to get worse—which was a terrifying thought. So despite being the heaviest and most out of shape of my life, I got a gym membership. I was tired of being miserable and feeling bad. Deep down I knew I could do better. My journey to fitness was gradual. It took time for the person you see today to emerge. Slowly but surely, day after day, I went to that gym and worked out and the weight started coming off. Getting back to my love of being athletic helped me get healthy, fit and get my life back on track. Today at 35 years old I am in the best shape of my life!

People ask me all the time how I came to be a Personal Trainer. As I mentioned in the beginning, our paths sometimes are discovered in unexpected ways. One day on Facebook someone posted a quote that changed my whole life. It said, “Find Something That You Love To Do and Then Find A Way To Make Money At It.” This really struck a cord deep within me and got me thinking. I realized that I was spending a lot of time at the gym and absolutely loved working out. Something clicked that this is what I needed to do with my life. So I started pursuing being a Personal Trainer professionally.

In the beginning my first clients were my fellow servers and co-workers. One by one, and through word of mouth, I got more and more people giving me the opportunity to help them change their lives. After helping someone lose 150 pounds I realized that this was something I was really good at and the passion to help more people transform their lives grew stronger.

Then, as destiny would have it, I met Shawn Busby about four years ago at Four Star Fitness. We hit it off immediately and it didn’t take long for us to discover that we both had a  strong desire and sense of purpose to help lead people to healthier lifestyles. After working together for several years we decided to make our vision a reality and opened FitCamp 180. I absolutely love coming to work every day knowing that we are making a difference in people’s lives.

If my story conveys anything, I hope it conveys hope that no matter how low you’ve gotten, God can bring you out. I’m proof of that. I know what it’s like to be at the bottom financially, spiritually and physically—which I believe helps make me an even better trainer—because I’ve lived it. God has brought me a long way from sleeping on friends’ couches! I’m now blessed to be doing what I love—which is to help pull people from the bottom to the top in their physical fitness. FitCamp 180 is a great place to take that first step to changing your life. Let us help you do that!
